What is HERMS?

Cool Picture of elcos brewery

A HERMS (Heat Exchanged Recirculating Mash System) brewing system is intended for all-grain homebrewing. In short it’s a miniature simplified version of what large industrial breweries use and consists of 3 kettles: the Hot Liquor Tun(HLT), Mash Tun (MT) and the Boil Kettle (BK). These can be seen in the figure above. If you are new to HERMS please consider reading, “which HERMS is right for me” to get a detailed description of all components and how they work.

Insert interactive figure BrewPi

In this interactive figure you can see the effects of using various BrewPi components will be on your brewery. Changing the boil sizes and power of heating elements will all affect your brewday. The default values are what we recommend for the novice to HERMS brewing. For a step by step explanation on how to build your brewery using BrewPi components please read the Step by Step guide.
